Holiday accommodation

Kaitaia offers a wide variety of accommodation to suit your needs - from ‘handy to town’ backpacker hostels, YHA, camping grounds, motels and hotels, to the domestic comfort of bed & breakfast, home stays and farm stays.

Accommodation is categorised in accordance with Qualmark criteria as follows:

Backpackers

The Backpackers category includes budget "shared" accommodation in a hostel, lodge, or "hotel" where the emphasis is on the active travelling experience.

Most offer a mixture of dormitories, double, twin and single rooms. Some rooms may include linen; otherwise this can be hired. Some rooms may also have TVs, fridges, tea and coffee and storage facilities.

Facilities such as kitchens, bathrooms, lounges and laundries are usually shared, although private and en-suite bathrooms are sometimes available. Properties range from small converted houses to large hotel-like establishments.

Guest and Hosted

The Guest and Hosted category includes bed & breakfasts, farm and home stays, guest houses, boutique lodges, inns and similar establishments providing "home-like" or "character" accommodation. Usually there is emphasis on the personal interaction between the guest and the host.

Kitchen/cooking facilities are not usually provided, although some properties may offer self-contained cottages. Depending on the style of the property, bedrooms may include tea and coffee making facilities, TV and a phone. Lounge facilities are usually shared with the hosts and/or other guests. Bathrooms may be en-suite, private or shared. Breakfasts are a feature and are usually part of an all-inclusive tariff. Other meals may be provided on request.

Holiday Parks

The Holiday Parks category includes camping grounds and motor camps. Properties may provide communal kitchens, toilets, showers and laundries in addition to a variety of additional features, including:

  • powered and non-powered sites for tents and camper vans
  • cabins with beds or bunks, - bedding is often available for hire
  • en-suite Units with their own shower and toilet
  • self-contained units with TV, equipped kitchen, shower and toilet, often with more than one bedroom. Bedding is often provided or available for hire
  • lodges/group accommodation - may vary from bunk rooms to en-suite rooms

Holiday Homes

The Holiday Homes category includes intimate "homes away from home" for today's modern traveller.

These individual properties offer a vast range of locations, facilities and services - across a wide range of price levels. Accommodations in this category are essentially 'self-catering' in nature.

Hotels

The Hotels category includes properties with at least one licensed bar and restaurant, on the premises or adjacent, with charge-back facilities.

Rooms usually have tea and coffee-making facilities and there is on-site management at all times. All provide breakfast whether in a restaurant or breakfast room, or via room service. Some hotels have conference and banqueting facilities.

Self-contained and Serviced

The Self-contained and Serviced category includes motels, motor lodges, motor inns, motel apartments, serviced apartments and serviced holiday apartments and cottages.

Units are serviced daily or as otherwise agreed with the guest, and are self-contained providing at least tea and coffee-making facilities and a private or en-suite bathroom. Frequently, cooking facilities (microwave and/or range) are provided within the accommodation unit so guests can prepare their own meals independently. Milk, tea, coffee and sugar are usually supplied for guests' immediate use.

Bedding and linen are provided. Communal laundry facilities are often available and some units may have their own laundry facilities. Units may have TVs, phone, iron and modem for computer use. At extra cost, breakfasts can often be ordered the night before.
