and their timber helped shape the country's colonial
beginnings. Matakohe, on the 'Kauri Coast' is the
starting point for a 3 hour trip into a vibrant past,
led by fifth-generation descendents of kauri millers
and bushmen. On this eco tour, see 600-year-old trees,

The Kauri Museum is an amazing theme museum in the
north of New Zealand. Here outstanding displays tell
the stories of pioneer settlers to this region through
their use of kauri timber and gum. The Kauri is the
largest tree in New Zealands forest's and grows to
a huge size. Its timber was very important as a building
material both at home and abroad. Used for houses,
furniture and ships it was in great demand. The trees
also bled gum that was dug from the land and exported
to make varnish, linoleum and other products. At The
Kauri Museum we have life like displays showing the
collection of these products. Side by side with collections,
the beautiful things it was used to make and displays
showing its more practical uses by pioneers.
